Why is Jesus the only way?
If the claim that Jesus is “the only way” strikes you as narrow or arrogant, we’re really glad you’re here. It’s a fair objection, and it deserves an honest answer, not a defensive one.
In a world that prizes openness, few things sound worse than claiming one way is the way. It can come across as smug, even dangerous. So let’s take the offense seriously rather than brush past it — because the answer matters, and a sneering version of this claim has done real damage.
It’s Jesus’ claim, not ours to soften
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Jesus, in John 14:6
This isn’t something Christians dreamed up to feel superior. It’s a claim Jesus made about himself. And notice: every worldview makes exclusive truth claims, including “all religions lead to God” (that statement excludes every religion that says otherwise). The question isn’t whether someone’s claim is exclusive, but whose claim is true. Christians believe Jesus earned the right to make this one — by living it, dying for it, and rising again.
Exclusive claim, radically open invitation
Here’s what makes the Christian version of this surprisingly inclusive: the “one way” is a person, and his door is open to absolutely everyone — every race, class, history, and failure. No one is too far gone, and no one earns their way in by being impressive or religious enough. RockPoint is a Spirit-filled church that believes this with joy: Jesus being the only way isn’t a velvet rope keeping people out; it’s a wide door anyone can walk through. The most exclusive claim turns out to be the most welcoming invitation in the world.
What you can do with this
- Examine the claim at its source. Read the Gospel of John and weigh who Jesus says he is, in his own words.
- Separate the message from its abusers. Some have wielded this claim arrogantly. Judge it by Jesus, not by his worst representatives.
- Bring the “what about” questions. Honest questions about other faiths and those who never heard are welcome — ask us.
- Notice the door is open to you. Whatever your past, the invitation includes you, today.
A prayer for the honest objector
“God, this claim is hard for me, and I don’t want a faith I have to be dishonest to hold. If Jesus really is the way, show me — and help me see whether it’s a door rather than a wall. I’m willing to look. Amen.”

Questions people ask next
Aren’t all religions basically the same?
They overlap in some ethics, but they make genuinely different and often contradictory claims about God, humanity, and salvation. Truly respecting other faiths means taking those real differences seriously, not flattening everyone into sameness.
What about people who never heard of Jesus?
The Bible says God is perfectly just and perfectly merciful, and that the Judge of all the earth will do right. We can entrust those we can’t account for to a God kinder than we are. Our job is to share the good news, not to consign anyone.
If Jesus is the way, what does that mean for me?
It means the door is genuinely open to you, exactly as you are. The exclusivity isn’t a wall to keep people out; it’s a single, wide-open door that anyone can walk through.
